O’Connell garnered strange looks from his parents as they passed by his room when he would practice his announcing skills by reading magazine advertisement copy out loud. While they might have expected to hear a record from Bruce Springsteen, his parents got Ed McMahon instead.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television Communication from the University of Dayton (OH). A pathetic (yet dedicated) golfer, he lives in Upstate New York with his family.
